Today in brilliant things: Cher is the newest icon to star in a Marc Jacobs campaign. The ad (which stylist Katie Grand shared via Instagram), photographed by David Sims, shows the 69-year-old music legend and baller human wearing a floor-length black dress with sparkly striped details, a leather moto jacket, and leather gloves. Her hair is wonderfully frizzed out, giving her a witchy, electrocuted look we want to emulate.
The casting makes sense—Marc Jacobs brought Cher as his surprise date to this year's Met Gala, dressing her in a plunging, sequined getup with a high slit that was very va va voom, or, to put it simply, Cher. We should have known the designer and music legend had some sort of secret in store for us, but this is a wonderful surprise.

Among the burning questions that have begun to emerge on the Met Gala red carpet tonight: One, doesn’t TBT stand for “Turn Back Time”? And two, has Cher found her new all-American designer match in Marc Jacobs? Tonight she ascended the museum stairs escorted by the designer, in a shimmering multicolor floor-skimming dress by Jacobs featuring a high leg slit. It made for an entrance that offered, perhaps, just a bit more coverage, but was as head-turning and spectacular as her 1974 Met Gala debut, in a look so newsworthy it made the cover of Time magazine—as well as Kim Kardashian West’s Instagram feed (West, who wore a sheer, derriere-décolleté Roberto Cavalli by Peter Dundas look, posted the throwback portrait with this caption: “Cher at the 1st ever Met Gala! I just met her and told her this photo was my inspiration for my dress tonight!”)

That look, of course, was constructed almost entirely of strategically placed rhinestones, marabou feathers, and sheer, sheer, fabric, and it was created by yet another iconic all-American designer, Bob Mackie, who walked on the well-plumed arm of the singer and multiple–Vogue cover model. It was a star-making moment: Mackie would go on to design more than four decades’ worth of equally daring and incandescent ensembles for Cher for the stage, for the Oscars red carpet, and beyond, most of which eschewed opaque fabric in favor of megawatt memorable style. Last year, the two ended their longtime professional union, when the designer declined to outfit Cher for her “Dressed to Kill” tour, leaving her reportedly heartbroken. If tonight’s Met moment is a sign of things to come, a third burning question emerges: Can we expect a Marc Jacobs headdress in the near future?
